Philippe Clement probably didn’t think that his first summer transfer window as Rangers boss would quite the way that it has.
It started well enough with a raft of young and promising players arriving to replace seasoned veterans who had had too many chances and not taken them.
One player who falls under that category but who should be at his peak is Scott Wright with the Rangers winger now linked with a new move away from Ibrox.
Birmingham City eye Rangers swoop for Scott Wright
Rabbi Matondo was linked with a move to Birmingham City before his man of the match performance against Ross County and then Ben Davies was announced as joining the League One outfit on loan.
Birmingham City are spending relatively big money for the league that they are in with billionaire owners who have plans to reach the top of English football.
Wright, according to Sky Sports, is close to a move to the Midlands with a medical booked in already.
Clement suggested that the match day squad that featured against Ross County wouldn’t be going anywhere and the new report from Sky Sports suggests that he is a man of his word.Â
Wright has played under four Rangers managers.
Every one of them gave him a chance and a run of games, however, with 12 goals in 120 appearances, the numbers speak for themselves.
Abdallah Sima hit more than that in 31 appearances after missing three months of the season from the same position.
Despite his status as a homegrown player, Wright must be moved on with his contract ending in 2025.
A new deal won’t be offered and any money that can be brought in will help to find a replacement.
It also gets a player off the wage bill who will spend most of his time getting splinters on the bench or sitting in the stands.
Wright exit would pave the way for Clement to sign an upgrade
The one in, one out, problem that Philippe Clement inherited has been covered extensively by the manager and he is fully aware of how difficult it is to move players on who aren’t producing:
“Yes that’s the case.
“And some of them know it already a really long time and they’re still in the building so that makes things more difficult.
“But it is what it is. I cannot put a gun to their head to get them out of the building, that’s also not the idea.
“It’s not something I can control. So I don’t put any energy in that.
“All the energy is in the players who are here, the players who will be here, and to get the next result. All the energy is in that.”
With Ross McCausland and Rabbi Matondo looking much improved this season, Scott Wright finds himself as far down the pecking order as fifth or even sixth choice.
Add Jefte and Dujon Sterling as well as Ianis Hagi, if he doesn’t leave, and there is literally no point in Wright sticking around to just make the most of the facilities at Auchenhowie.
Nils Koppen and Clement won’t be difficult to deal with when it comes to a player who the club has already agreed to sell last summer, maybe this time Wright will actually leave.
