British Council celebrates India UK fashion collaborations at New Delhi exhibition

The British Council has launched an exhibition in New Delhi titled ‘Making Matters’ to celebrate fashion collaborations and connections between India and the UK. Running until December 9, the free exhibition focuses on sustainable development.

The exhibition has launched on Kasturba Gandhi Marg in New Delhi and delves into the industries of fashion, textiles, and technology. The exhibition has been created with key partners including Fashion Revolution, the Fashion, Textile and Technology Institute, University of the Arts London, and the United Nations.
 
“We deepened our global partnership with collectives working towards sustainability in fashion in India to understand the craft landscape and the needs in the sector,” said the British Council director for India Alison Barrett about the inception of the exhibition, The Hindu reported.
 
Making Matters features a ‘Circular Khadi’ exhibit which features a model for recycling textile waste into new yarn and fabrics to reduce textile waste and help to improve the lives of local artisans, Outlook Traveller reported. The ‘Darn’ platform is designed to link up consumers with skilled garment menders in India and the ‘Bequin’ segment showcases environmentally friendly sequins made from algae and cellulose.
 
“As part of Culture Responds to Global Challenges, British Council has initiated several collaborations between India and UK to bring a shared understanding of how indigenous craft and new technology can help build a more climate positive fashion and textile industry,” read a wall of text at the exhibition. “We invite you to learn about our new research developments, industry initiatives, and partnerships.”
