A British holidaymaker has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after being pulled from the sea on a Spanish island.
The 70-year-old was rushed to the hospital after getting into difficulties in the sea off the Formentera holiday island in the Mediterranean.
Lifeguards performed life-saving CPR on him after he was pulled out of the water at the picturesque Ses Illetes beach.
He was stabilised by emergency responders on the sand before an ambulance transported him to the island hospital.
But doctors then decided he should be flown by helicopter to Can Misses Hospital in nearby Ibiza due to his serious condition.
The incident happened shortly after 3.30pm today.
The man, who has not been named, is said to be in intensive care fighting for his life.
It was not immediately clear if he was alone at the time of the near-drowning or with family or friends.
The summer holiday season has had a tragic ending in the Balearic Islands.
Last week, the bodies of two British hikers were discovered during a search of a flooded canyon in Majorca.
Sarah Jane Thompson, 26, and her partner Alexander Johnson, 32, died after getting trapped in the floodwater.
