British tourists issued heatwave warning for Europe

Must read

Greece is currently experiencing its earliest heatwave on record and experts have predicted that tourists could see soaring temperatures in other popular destinations such as Spain this summer.

Heatwaves can be extremely dangerous. TV presenter Michael Mosley died on the Greek island of Symi while an American and Dutch tourist were also found dead in Greece during the extreme heat.

With high temperatures expected to continue over the summer months, British tourists have been warned to take care when holidaying in the region.

Huw Owen, co-founder of TravelLocal, has shared his advice to avoid the heat and stay safe on holiday in Europe this summer.

Tourists should always follow advice from local authorities and their holiday provider during extreme weather conditions.

Seek shade between 12-7pm

Huw said: “In terms of taking precautions against the heat, it’s best to do as many Europeans do and recalibrate the day. Between 12-7pm, it’s often far too hot to be outside, this is when you should get some rest and shade.”

Enjoy the nightlife

If you’re resting in the day, use the evenings to get out and enjoy city life. Huw said: “Living like a true European means using the intense heat to your advantage and getting a few hours’ kip in the afternoon, leaving you feeling more energised to embrace the nightlife in the evening.

“This is why many bars and restaurants don’t come to life until 9-10pm in countries like Spain, as it becomes much more comfortable to walk around by this hour.”

Avoid alcohol

It might be tempting to sample some local alcohol on your trip, but Huw recommends keeping alcohol consumption to a minimum.

Huw said: “Be careful not to have too many drinks when the temperature is so high. Alcohol instantly dehydrates you, which can then result in sunstroke if you don’t replenish your body with water.”

Embrace indoor activities

Huw added: “There’s a tendency to feel as though you have to be outside when you’re on holiday, but during a heatwave, it’s important to spend a few hours of the day indoors or, failing that, in the shade.

“If you’re on a beach holiday, make sure you only sunbathe in the early morning and early evenings. On a city break, use the heat as an opportunity to immerse yourself in cultural activities such as exploring museums and galleries.”

Eat foods that will keep you hydrated

There’s a reason that Mediterranean dishes are usually light and vegetable-based. Salads often have a high water content that helps to keep you hydrated.

Huw added: “Eating smaller dishes, more often, will keep you energised throughout the day too.”
