If there’s one thing that Italians know it’s their coffee.
Brits and tourists from all over the world flock to the country to enjoy its food, fashion – and a supreme caffeine fix.
But visitors to the country have been warned that if they make a common order as they would in the UK they will end up with totally the wrong thing.
Taking to social media platform TikTok, Alistair Green highlighted the issue on his account @mralistairgreen with a hilarious skit that’s now been viewed more than 800,000 times.
In the clip, he impersonates a lady in a cafe who is correcting another person in the queue about ordering a latte.
The character says: “Sorry to bother you – can I just check: did you just order a latte? Thought so.
“Word to the wise. Little bit of advice for you. If you ever find yourself in Italy and you order a latte, do you know what they’ll give you? A cup of milk – and you’ll look awfully bloody daft. Cause that’s what that means there.”
The cheeky ‘woman’ then goes onto say that what her fellow coffee-lover must do when in the country is order a caffe latte – and it turns out that she’s 100 percent correct.
Travel writer Barry Divola wrote about his experiences in the country with his family – and put together a guide for those wanting to order coffee in Italy.
He said: “Ask for a latte, and you’ll be given a glass of milk.
“That’s unsurprising, as latte means milk in Italian.”
He added: “If you want the rough equivalent of a caffe latte, ask for a cappuccino,” reports The Sydney Morning Herald.
Those who watched the sketch on TikTok revealed that they’d made several gaffes when ordering coffee in other countries.
One said: “I ordered a latte in France and they gave me a talking down saying its a cafe au lait, then proceeded to give me the wrong thing.”
“This has absolutely happened to us,” said another.
Meanwhile, one Italian city has been nicknamed the “coffee capital”.
Italian cities such as Rome and Milan will be welcoming millions of tourists this summer, but CelebrityCrusies.com says Trieste is a lesser-known destination that provides the charm and character tourists look for when they head to Italy.
The city is located east of Venice, tucked away by the border with Slovenia.
