A night of shocks…published at 07:00 Greenwich Mean Time

Well, that was quite a night of Champions League football.

Questions were asked when Uefa introduced the new extended league format as to whether it will all be too predictable.

It was anything but on Tuesday, when the league champions of England, Spain and Germany were all humbled.

Liverpool produced a stunning display, powered by Luis Diaz’s second-half hat-trick, to send home Xabi Alonso and his Bayer Leverkusen side with some soul searching to do.

And Manchester United’s head coach in waiting, Ruben Amorim, led his current side Sporting to an equally impressive victory at home to soon-to-be rival Pep Guardiola’s injury-hit Manchester City side.

Defending champions Real Madrid were also well beaten at home by AC Milan.

And what a result for Celtic, who put themselves well in the mix to progress to the knockout stages with a thrilling win at home to RB Leipzig, who are currently second in the Bundesliga.

Stick with us for reaction to all those results.
