The Turkish port town of Ayvalık is often overlooked by tourists, but it has hidden depths that many are unaware of. A few streets back from the waterfront is a stunning village.
This alternative holiday destination offers a huge amount. It’s a town where tradition meets the classic beach vibe, basking in the warmth of the North Aegean Sea. You can even see the Greek island of Lesbos from its coastline.
Many of the old stone houses have been converted into boutique hotels while the Greek Orthodox churches have been turned into mosques. This town has a unique charm like no other.

As this is a coastal town it is of course known for its fresh seafood dishes. You can sample the tasty local cuisine at one of the seaside restaurants where you’ll be able to gorge on grilled octopus, shrimp, calamari, and a range of seafood appetisers.
Because the town is relatively unknown to foreigners, this is the perfect place to visit if you want to get away from busy life. You won’t find swarms of tourists here, especially as we’re now entering Autumn.
