Located on the scenic Pembrokeshire Coast, Saundersfoot is a charming coastal village that rivals popular Tenby.
Pretty Saundersfoot has plenty of activities, sandy beaches, pubs, and restaurants for those in the know.
The Sunday Times has just named the small seaside resort one of the ‘best places to live by the sea in the UK 2024’.
The Sunday Times journalist Tim Palmer wrote: “Saundersfoot may not have the Instagrammable looks of Tenby along the coast, but on most counts, it’s more than a match for its colourful Georgian neighbour.”
Here’s our guide on why underrated Saundersfoot is one of our favourite places in Wales.
Saundersfoot Beaches
The village’s main attraction is Saundersfoot Beach, known for its expanse of golden sands. This long, family-friendly beach is perfect for sunbathing and beachcombing and hosts events such as the World Cawl Cooking Championships.
The Blue Flag Beach was also voted amongst the best for sustainability by TripAdvisor in 2024. TripAdvisor described Saundersfood as “a sandy beach with clear blue waters. It’s a great spot for paddle boarding or exploring rockpools, and there’s also a promenade with shops and cafes.”
Nearby Coppet Hall Beach offers a more serene setting just a short walk from Saundersfoot Beach. The sandy stretch is also a gateway to the Saundersfoot to Wiseman’s Bridge walk, which takes you through scenic coastal paths and tunnels.
Things to do in Saundersfoot
Coastal Foraging
Forager Craig Evans runs coastal foraging courses in secret spots around Saunderfoot and Pembrokeshire. His classic courses are a great entry to coastal foraging, where you’ll embark on a rockpool safari to gather shellfish, seaweed, and sea vegetables to cook and eat on the beach.
On his extreme low tide courses, you’re more likely to find crustaceans such as edible crabs and prawns, and if extremely lucky, potentially a lobster. Fortunate foragers might also encounter a range of marine life to photograph, including soft corals, sponges, species of anemone and sea squirts, kelps, and even octopuses – if you’re lucky.
Explore Saundersfoot Harbour
Saundersfoot Harbour was completed in 1834, primarily to serve the burgeoning coal industry in Pembrokeshire at the time. The harbour facilitated coal exports, significantly contributing to the local economy.
In recent years, Saundersfoot Harbour has undergone significant redevelopment to modernise its facilities and enhance visitor experiences. This includes improved marine facilities, the establishment of new business ventures, and the promotion of local heritage through the Welcome and Heritage Centre.
Today, Saundersfoot Harbour is a lively part of the town with colourful boats and charming cafes. It’s a great place to enjoy an ice cream by the water, watch the sunset, or join a boat trip to explore the beautiful coastline and spot some wildlife.
Spa day at St Bride’s Hotel and Spa
Unparalleled sea views can be found at award-winning, clifftop St Bride’s Hotel and Spa, where you can cast your gaze over Saundersfoot Bay from their incredible swimming pool and elevated rooms.
This privately owned hotel is a few minutes walk from the beach, allowing guests to enjoy a spot of ocean therapy before indulging in the many spa treatments on offer. If you’re staying at the hotel, expect bright and airy rooms thoughtfully styled with hints of coastal chic and featuring quality bedding and furnishings.
At their cliff restaurant, guests can also taste Pembrokeshire produce and locally landed fish, with seasonally informed dishes. The main attraction is the dreamy infinity pool and marine spa. Unwind in a full thermal suite that features a rock sauna, ice fountain, steam room, and marine hydro pool.
Pembrokeshire Coast Path
Hikers will love the Tenby to Saundersfoot walk along the Pembrokeshire Coast path to see castles, beaches and cliffs. This path offers impressive coastal views, the soothing sound of crashing waves, and fresh sea air.
It’s an excellent way to discover the area’s natural beauty, and there are plenty of food options on either side.
Folly Farm and Manor Wildlife Park
Nearby Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo is a fantastic day out for family-friendly activities, just a short drive from Saundersfoot. This multifaceted attraction offers a blend of a zoo, vintage fairground, indoor and outdoor play areas, and a variety of accommodations.
It’s home to over 100 species, including the only giraffes in Wales, African lions, Eastern black rhinos, and more. Notable exhibits include the Pride of Pembrokeshire lion reserve, Penguin Coast, and Kifaru Reserve for rhinos.
Multiple play areas also cater to different age groups, including The Big Dig and Follystone Racetrack.
