Cornwall’s seaside town where you can ‘avoid the hustle and bustle’

Must read

“St Ives may be Cornwall‘s crown jewel,” said the experts from Leisure Lakes Bikes, a leisure business owned by brothers Tim and Chris Noy. “But to avoid the hustle and bustle of crowds particularly during the summer months, Padstow is a great choice for a quieter coastal retreat in Cornwall.”

The coastal region is one of the UK’s top destinations, with Cornwall receiving an estimated five million visitors every year.

But with its quaint seaside towns and narrow, rabbit-warren roads, it’s a destination that can begin to feel cramped in some parts as hoards of tourists descend.

Padstow remains one of Cornwall’s popular locations for tourists, but sees fewer masses than St Ives, according to Leisure Lakes Bikes.

The population of the parish is approximately 2,500, which includes nearby Trevone village, according to figures from Padstow Town Council. In the summer months, this figure rises to around 5,500 and day visitors are in the region of 500,000 a year.

In St Ives, figures from the town council show, the town received 540,000 day trippers and 220,000 overnight visitors every year.

Naturally, if you want to really beat the crowds, it’s best to visit in the shoulder season outside of the school holidays and peak summer months.

“Situated on the north coast, Padstow exudes charm with its quaint harbour, narrow streets, and scenic coastal walks,” said Leisure Lakes Bikes. “Foodies will delight in the town’s culinary offerings, including the famous seafood restaurants owned by celebrity chef Rick Stein.

“With its relaxed vibe and stunning scenery, Padstow offers a refreshing alternative to the hustle and bustle of St Ives.”

Padstow has risen in fame over the last 30 years thanks to chef Rick Stein, who opened his flagship seafood restaurant there in 1975. Padstow is also featured in many of Rick Stein’s television programmes, including Rick Stein’s Cornwall on BBC2.

The seaside town is known for its picturesque views, including its harbour. As well as plenty of locally run shops, pubs and restaurants, no visit is complete without taking in some of the area’s most beautiful beaches.

Local beach guide Cornwall Beaches named St George’s Cove, the closest beach to Padstow, and Harbour Cove as two of the best beaches nearby. Both offer beautiful vistas of the sea and are perfect for paddling.
