Snacks and drinks on a plane is one of life’s greatest pleasures, but there is one drink that experts say should never ever be ordered on a flight.
If it’s canned or in a bottle such as soft drink, wine or beer you should be safe but anything that requires the use of water stored on the plane should be avoided like the plague according to TikTok influencer Kat Kamalani.
Kat says she worked for six years “with one of the biggest airlines that you could possibly imagine” and she would never order a coffee or a tea while on a flight.
She alleged the water tanks are “disgusting” and rarely cleaned, and that flight attendants “rarely, rarely” drink tea or coffee while on shift.
In addition to this, the coffee machines are rarely cleaned according to Kat and the water source is often made right next to the toilets.
A 2019 study about the water in airlines ranked 11 major and 12 American regional airlines according to their quality of water and found that they all used the same water source as the bathroom.
However, if you see the water being poured from a bottle, it’s perfectly fine to drink it – and you should drink as much as you can.
HuffPost senior reporter and travel expert Caroline Bologna said ″[Planes] are very dehydrating — it’s a very dry environment.
“That’s why when you sit in those premium cabins, they give you nice lotions. … Even before you fly, try to really hydrate or have electrolytes.”
If you see flight attendants pouring water from anything other than a bottle or can, you should probably graciously decline.
“Sometimes, on flights, we would run out of bottled water,” former flight attendant Sue Fogwell told Travel & Leisure. “If you see a pitcher of water on the beverage cart in economy class, skip it — it’s from the water tank. Ask for a can of seltzer water.”
