Ed Sheeran has apologised after he inadvertently interrupted new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim’s post-match interview at Portman Road on Sunday.

Amorim was being interviewed by Sky Sports after United had been held to a 1-1 draw by Ipswich in his first game in charge.

Pop megastar Sheeran, an Ipswich fan who sponsors the club’s kit and owns a minority stake in the club of 1.4 per cent, stated that he wasn’t aware that Amorim was being interviewed.

Sheeran added that he was attempting to speak to Jamie Redknapp, who was part of the Sky Sports panel along with Roy Keane, Izzy Christiansen and presenter Kelly Cates.

Sheeran wrote on Instagram: ‘Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday, didn’t actually realise he was being interviewed at the time, was popping to say hi and bye to Jamie.

‘Obvz feel a bit of a b****nd but life goes on. Great game though, congrats to all involved x.’

Amorim appeared frustrated by the situation, with the interview eventually continuing after Sheeran had departed.

Sheeran had come over to greet Redknapp and then said: ‘I don’t think he (Amorim) wants to speak to me.’

The new United head coach was left unimpressed as he shook his head, with Sheeran then adding: I love being back in the Premier League.’

Fans on social media were left fuming as they slammed Sheeran for being ‘rude’.

One wrote: ‘I’m honestly a bit aghast at how rude that was from Ed Sheeran. Amorim should have told them all to get f****d.’

Another United fan posted on X: ‘Imagine letting a pop star interrupt an interview with a coach. Gets his face on the screen every Ipswich game’.

A third added: ‘Amateur hour, totally unprofessional and may I say a tad disrespectful when interviewing a manager.’

United took the lead in the game after just two minutes as Marcus Rashford found the net, with Amorim getting off to a dream start in charge.

However, Omari Hutchinson equalised for Ipswich just prior to half time, with the hosts proceeding to secure a point.

Ipswich, who are back in the Premier League for the first time since 2002, are currently in 18th place.

Sheeran often attends Ipswich matches when his schedule permits and a new mural was recently unveiled of him at Portman Road.

The artwork shows two images of Sheeran – one of him as a young boy and one as he looks now.
