Matthew Hall, a travel expert at airport transfer specialists Hoppa explained why the Portuguese city should be on our radar. Hall said: “The Riverside area of Ribeira is an enchanting combination of old-fashioned fishing district, elegant restaurants and smoky bars.”
Holidaymakers can take a stroll by the River Douro and visit the bustling downtown area or explore the shadowy lanes and cobbled alleys.
The expert added: “Must-sees include the 12th-century cathedral, the Clerigos tower and church, the astonishingly ornate church of Sao Francisco and the church of Carmo with its stunning tiled facades.
“Take a river cruise and experience the town’s five bridges from a river perspective, boarding in the Ribeira or near the Ponte de Dom Luis I at Vila Nova de Gaia. Join in the hustle and bustle of the Mercado do Bolhao, a lively street market in the town centre.”
Meanwhile, there are other nearby places to visit from Porto’s Francisco Sa Carnero Airport. Hall continued: “Amarante is just a short drive from the airport and its architectural beauty makes it look like something from a fairy tale.
“The Ponte de Sao Goncalo is the perfect vantage point over the town, offering some scintillating views, while the church of Igreja de Sao Goncalo is a must-see for any art lovers.”
But for lovers of life aquatic, a trip to Buarcos is a must. The pro said: “This small town is famed in Portugal for its sublime surfing conditions, with plenty of waves to catch and glorious weather it’s no wonder so many people come here to enjoy water sports.
“And while you’re in the region why not visit Villa Nova de Gala to try out some of Portugal’s famous wines? The town isn’t too far from Porto but boasts some of the finest ports and sherries in the world. The perfect way to end a day in sunny Portugal.”
