England to announce Thomas Tuchel appointment as new manager on Wednesday?

Must read

Thomas Tuchel reportedly reaches an agreement with the FA to become the new England manager and an announcement could be made at a scheduled press conference at Wembley on Wednesday.

Thomas Tuchel has reportedly reached an agreement with the Football Association to become the new England manager.

The 51-year-old has been out of work since leaving his post at Bayern Munich at the end of last season, following a disappointing trophyless campaign which culminated with a third-placed finish in the Bundesliga.

Tuchel has since been linked with a number of high-profile jobs, including Manchester United amidst uncertainty over the future of Erik ten Hag.

The prospect of taking an international job has also been mooted for Tuchel, with reports emerging on Tuesday afternoon claiming that the German has held talks with the FA about the vacancy England head coach position.

England have been without a permanent manager since Gareth Southgate resigned in July following the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain.

Under-21s boss Lee Carsley was put in interim charge in August and has taken charge of four senior matches in the Nations League, but the 50-year-old has never clearly expressed whether he would like to take the role on a full-time basis.

England set to confirm Tuchel appointment

Manchester City‘s Pep Guardiola – someone ‘hugely admired’ by the FA – was allegedly contacted to gauge his interest in the England job, but the Catalan coach is now leaning towards extending his contract at the Etihad Stadium.

A host of other names including Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, Jurgen Klopp and Ange Postecoglou, to name a few, have also been linked with the Three Lions, but the FA now appear to have chosen Tuchel as their man to succeed Southgate.

According to multiple reports, including one from The Times, Tuchel has agreed to become the new England manager after a ‘rapid conclusion’ to negotiations with the FA.

Sky Sports News senior reporter Rob Dorsett claims that Tuchel has already signed his contract and a news conference has been scheduled at Wembley at 1.30pm on Wednesday.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham is due to attend the news conference where he is expected to be joined by Tuchel to confirm his appointment as England manager.

German coach Tuchel the ‘primary choice’ to become next England manager

England are said to have identified Tuchel as their ‘primary choice’ to take the reins of the first-team squad, with FA technical director John McDermott known to have been keen to appoint a coach with a proven track record of winning trophies.

Tuchel fits that desired profile as he has won a total of 11 pieces of silverware in charge of four different clubs, including league titles at both Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

He also lifted the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup during a 19-month spell in charge of Chelsea – his only previous managerial role in English football.

Tuchel is set to become just the third non-English manager to take charge of the senior men’s England team after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

However, it remains to be seen whether he will take over immediately or replace interim boss Carsley after November’s international break.

The Three Lions are scheduled to face Greece away from home in their penultimate UEFA Nations League fixture on November 14, three days before welcoming the Republic of Ireland to Wembley Stadium.
