England v Samoa: Sam Tomkins named England team manager

Must read

Former England captain Sam Tomkins has been appointed team manager for the two-Test autumn series against Samoa.

The 35-year-old will join head coach Shaun Wane’s set-up in the behind-the-scenes administrative role.

England and Samoa meet in Wigan on 27 October and Leeds on 2 November.

Tomkins has been working in an off-field role for Catalans Dragons this season after retiring in October because of a knee injury.

He made a surprise playing return for Catalans in July following a request from head coach Steve McNamara.

Tomkins captained Wane’s England side at the most recent World Cup in 2022, when they lost 27-26 to Samoa in golden-point extra time.

Wane returns after missing the 40-8 victory over France in June because of ankle surgery.

Andy Last, who led England in Wane’s absence, will resume his role as assistant coach, along with Lee Briers.

An initial squad of more than 30 players for the Samoa series will be announced on Friday morning.
