‘Amazing achievement’published at 13:26
Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard believes Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi has “all the attributes to take him a long way”.
The 23-year-old has won plaudits for his performances in England’s opening three games at Euro 2024 – his first major tournament.
Guehi has impressed since moving to Palace in 2012 from the Blues, where he came through the academy and made his first-team debut as a 19-year-old in the League Cup.
“I’m delighted for him,” Lampard told the Football Daily podcast. “I gave him his debut at Chelsea and he is a really polite, humble lad.
“You could see that he had all the attributes to take him a long way – particularly the personality: he wanted to do well. I liked the idea of working with him at the time because when a young kid comes through and shows that humility and wants to do well, that is an amazing thing to work with as a coach.
“But to go away and play as he did at Palace and come into an England squad with high pressure and people saying ‘I’m not sure about that’, his position is now the one position we are not talking about, which is an amazing achievement from him.
“He has come into this team and is doing a job and doing it really well. That is very refreshing to see.”
