European winter sun destination likened to Caribbean – but with cheaper flights

Must read

When looking at winter travel destinations, some travellers prioritise well-known destinations with mild weather where they can enjoy basking in the sunshine and relaxing.

Some names that come to mind include southern European hotspots like Crete in Greece, Seville in Spain – or for those looking to explore more distant lands, some of the Caribbean islands.

However, other holiday-goers prefer to explore the hidden gems, where they won’t likely find as many tourists this time of year.

For the latter, a group of travel agents at eShores have recommended The Azores, a group of Portuguese islands of volcanic origins that have “Caribbean-style luxury with an eco-conscious soul”.

The experts highlighted the archipelago’s “dramatic coastlines, mystical crater lakes, and world-class whale watching, all powered by sustainable initiatives”.

They added: “Shorter flights from the UK make this archipelago even more appealing. Each of the nine islands has its own distinct personality, from the thermal pools of São Miguel to the perfect cone of Pico Mountain, making island-hopping an irresistible adventure.”

According to the experts, flights to the Azores can cost up to £240 less than Caribbean, with round trips from London in December costing as little as £166.

Hotels are also said to be cheaper, working out to £140 less per night, according to the agents. Dining is also said to be more affordable on the Azores, costing £15 less per person.

And the weather seems to stay somewhat mild throughout the year, with daytime temperatures averaging at 15°C in December and 14°C in January, according to Holiday Weather.

With plenty of adventure activities and hiking to do, the islands’ winter weather seems ideal for exploring natural hot springs and thermal pools, such as those in Furnas.

Travellers can also visit the scenic trails around the twin lakes in Sete Cidades, or climb Portugal’s highest peak, Pico Mountain, for breathtaking views.

The Azores also offer excellent diving opportunities, with clear waters and rich marine life. Dive sites include underwater volcanic formations and shipwrecks.

Visitors can join a boat tour from Pico or São Miguel to see various whale species, including sperm whales, dolphins, and even the majestic blue whale during migration seasons.
