Italy is a popular holiday destination for Brits, offering a blend of delicious cuisine, rich culture, sunny weather, sea swims and relaxation.
However, some areas, such as the Amalfi Coast and Venice, can become overcrowded with tourists, particularly during the summer and autumn months.
Yet, there’s one region that remains relatively untouched by these crowds – Calabria.
Located in the southern part of Italy, in the ‘toe’ of the country’s boot shape, Calabria is a hidden gem that offers sun, sea, mouth-watering food and vibrant culture.
Tropea, a town in Calabria, is ideal for those seeking a balance of beach and culture. Known for its hilltop houses and stunning sea views, Tropea is a must-visit.
One of the highlights is the Santa Maria dell’Isola Monastery, a fairytale-like castle perched on its own mountain and surrounded by the ocean.
The structure, which was first built as a simple church in medieval times, has been redesigned and rebuilt several times following earthquakes in 1783 and 1905.
The history of the church perched upon a rock may be shrouded in mystery, yet it’s believed to date back to at least the 7th century, with Greek hermit monks as its early inhabitants.
Adventurous visitors are able to navigate the sharp incline of steps leading to the church, where they can wander within its verdant gardens, all the while surrounded by spectacular panoramas, reports the Mirror.
Those who have journeyed to this mediaeval sanctuary have praised the experience, despite the physically demanding route.
A traveller on Tripadvisor said: “This sanctuary is so magnificent because of how it sits in this amazing setting.
“The sanctuary itself is beautiful, but the vista from there is well worth visiting. Absolutely take the time to climb the steps.”
Another said: “The setting is incredible, high on a hill with beaches and turquoise waters on either side. The temple itself is beautiful as well as the grounds and views. Must see!”
Beyond its enchanting coastlines and historical architecture, Calabria has garnered fame for its rich culinary offerings.
The region is celebrated as the birthplace of ‘nduja – a spicy spreadable pork sausage that has climbed the ranks in trendy restaurants worldwide.
Alongside the renown of the Calabrian chilli, the cuisine here is known for its hot and spicy flavours, making it an essential experience for any food enthusiast.
With daily direct flights from the UK covering the majority of main airports, reaching this Italian haven has never been easier.
