Europe’s most overcrowded attraction is ‘overwhelming physically and mentally’

Must read

With increasing visitor numbers, many iconic locations across Europe struggle to accommodate the influx, leading to frustration among tourists.

A study conducted by the expert team at holidu analysed Tripadvisor reviews to identify attractions with an over-tourism problem.

At the top of the list was a popular French landmark that, while majestic, has failed to impress visitors due to crowding issues.

Over five percent of Tripadvisor reviews for the Palace of Versailles mention the “overwhelming” crowds, with some also highlighting the long queues.

Carol S typed: “Versailles is definitely a must-see. We didn’t realise just how overwhelming it would be both physically and mentally.”

Richard H shared: “The main ‘problem’ is the number of people. I realise I was there at high summer but it was packed and difficult to see around without being jostled.

“I was also surprised that it is mainly artwork you are looking at rather than preserved rooms with furniture.”

Another reviewer penned: “The down points are the queues and amount of people here.

“Long lines for the booked time slots snake around the front of the palace.

“This leads to pushing and shoving as you enter the building and go through security. What is it with some people and not being able to wait in line?!

“The crowds then bottlenecked in certain areas of the palace which was frustrating, meaning you didn’t see some of the rooms properly as you feel like you want to get out!”

Despite the frustration, many visitors did enjoy their experience, with SMM saying: “The grandeur and excess of the place – its sheer scale, size and opulence – has to be seen to be believed.”

Frankie W pointed out: “Beautiful with much to see. There was an exhibition of the Kings Horses when we were there which was fantastic and included work by Leonardo Da Vinci.

“The displays, especially of knights in armour on horses, are so well done. It’s an incredible property.”
