Dozens of excited people were in the queue ahead of the department store opening its doors for the first time in Golden Square Shopping Centre.

As previously reported, TJ Hughes has opened in the former Debenhams unit, which has been vacant since the store closed in 2021.

It is not the first time TJs has had a presence in Warrington, with the retailer once based in what is now The Hive on Sankey Street, before it closed with all other stores in 2011.

The Golden Square store opened at 10am this morning, Thursday, with a balloon arch over the entrance and many smiling staff members waiting to welcome people to the store.

It was previously confirmed that the opening created 25 job roles in the town, with many assisting shoppers as they had their first look around the new store.

The first 50 customers through the door were greeted with a voucher to spend inside.

TJ Hughes has moved to Warrington after closing its store in neighbouring Widnes, formerly located at Green Oaks Shopping Centre.

A spokesman said, with ‘deep regret’, that it was ‘extremely saddened’ to close its Widnes store due to a new lease not being agreed, but that the Warrington move was an ‘important step’.

“Warrington is a fantastic location, convenient for many shoppers, and we believe this will be good for both the town and for our brand’s exciting future,” a spokesman said.

On the move, TJ Hughes COO Jason Harmer previously said: “Returning to Warrington, where we have a strong history, is something we are really excited about.

“We will be recruiting 25 staff for the new store, and this move is part of the broader growth of the TJ Hughes estate.”

TJ Hughes was founded by Thomas Hughes in Liverpool back in 1912, growing to become a national chain before being saved from administration in 2011.

It brands itself as being a ‘provider of designer brands and quality goods at discounted prices’, and it also has a store in neighbouring St Helens.
