Expert’s ‘easy but effective shoe rule to beat luggage fees

Must read

Most airlines have luggage rules in place which limit how much weight you can carry or, in the case of many budget airlines, the size of everything from your cabin bags to your hand luggage.

When travelling with kids, the amount of things you need for a holiday can seem endless, but an expert from M&S Kidswear has shared an “easy” way to narrow down what to pack.

The tip ensures you can fit everything you need in your luggage and don’t end up with unnecessary items.

“The three shoes rule is great for families having to share luggage space and follows one very simple step – simply put, only pack a maximum of three pairs of shoes,” explained the expert.

“For a summer holiday, this typically means for the family to wear a pair of trainers, then you have room to pack two pairs of sandals – one smart and one practical. It’s an easy but effective hack to prevent chunky shoes from taking up the majority of your suitcase.”

The best way to decide what you need is to think about your holiday plans in advance. Gabriel Miller, an expert at Gatsby Shoes, recommended that holidaymakers should be mindful about what they put in their suitcase, and what stays at home.

“Packing efficiently not only eases the stress of travel but also helps you navigate different situations with ease, safe in the knowledge that you have a shoe for every occasion,” said Gabriel.

The right mix of shoes can cover you from a day at the beach right through to an elegant evening meal.

“It’s about bringing what you need, not what you might use,” added the shoe expert.

Gabriel shared their top shoes to pack, splitting them into three specific categories.

Your primary pair of shoes should be comfortable for walking, durable enough for adventure activities, and stylish enough not to detract from your daily outfits,” said Gabriel. “Opt for neutral colours that blend seamlessly with multiple outfits.”

Then, the expert suggests thinking about a nicer pair of shoes for any formal events or nice evenings out. “Even on vacation, a dressier shoe option is crucial for evenings out or more formal events,” said Gabriel.

Finally, for days by the pool or exploring the beach, a pair of comfortable sandals is a must-have.
