A new travel warning has been issued for holidaymakers heading to Italy. In recent days the country has had ‘severe’ flooding sweeping across some areas. Emilia Romagna, Liguria and Sicily are the main areas affected.

The Foreign Office has warned that rail services and roads may be affected and urged holidaymakers to check with their tour operator or accommodation provider before travelling. They have also urged people to follow the instructions of local authorities in Italy.

Some rivers banks have burst and landslides have been caused by heavy downpours, the Foreign Office said. According to the Foreign Office website, the warning is still in place today, October 22 and was last updated yesterday, October 21.

Italy follows Schengen area rules which means your passport must have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive. If you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago. Passports must also have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area
