Must read

A former Chelsea manager is reportedly keen to become the new England manager is Gareth Southgate decides to step down from the role.

Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is reportedly interested in replacing Gareth Southgate as England boss.

Southgate’s England future is now a hot topic of conversation following Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

The 53-year-old has led England to back-to-back European Championship finals as well as a semi-final appearance at the 2018 World Cup.

Although a major trophy has eluded the Three Lions, the Football Association are still keen for Southgate to lead the country into the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

However, with his current deal set to expire in December, it is now up to Southgate to decide whether he wants to extend his eight-year stay as England manager.

Tuchel eyeing England job

Following Sunday’s heartbreak in Berlin, Southgate has revealed he will “need to talk to the right people” about whether he stays on as England boss.

While Southgate is yet to make a decision, there is already much speculation about who could replace him if he walks away from the job.

According to The Sun, Tuchel would be interested in replacing Southgate after previously being linked with the England job following the 2022 World Cup.

Although there has been no contact with the FA, Tuchel would be keen to try his hand at international management for the first time in his career.

Tuchel, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2020-21, is currently out of work after leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season.

Who else has been linked with the England job?

Although Tuchel is keen on the position, another ex-Chelsea manager, Graham Potter, is currently the favourite to replace Southgate.

Potter, who succeeded Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, is still searching for his next role since being sacked by Chelsea in April 2023.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has been mooted as a potential candidate, but the Magpies will be reluctant to part ways with the 46-year-old.

There has been a suggestion that Lee Carsley could follow in Southgate’s footsteps and make the step up from coaching the England Under-21 side.

Former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino and ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp have also been linked with a foray into international management should Southgate decide to call time on his England tenure.
