French city that’s a dupe for Venice – but without the tourist tax

Must read

While Venice is grappling with the effects of overtourism, it’s no surprise that travellers are seeking alternatives where they can enjoy beautiful views without battling crowds.

The floating city has become so popular that a tourist tax has been implemented.

However, there’s a lesser-known city that offers all the charm of Venice without the masses and at a more affordable price.

Annecy, located in southern France, is another city built on a network of canals, but it also boasts a stunning backdrop of the French Alps and breathtaking architecture.

You can stroll through its historic old town and along the crystal-clear lake without having to navigate through hordes of tourists.

Beyond the canals, you’ll find enchanting weekly markets where local artisans display traditional crafts and delicacies.

Given its proximity to the water, fresh fish from the lake such as fera and arctic char are regional specialities, as are herbs from the Aravis Mountains.

There are also exquisite cheeses like Reblochon and Tome des Bauges, locally grown fruits and vegetables from the valley, and wine.

Visitors to the city have been captivated by its beauty, particularly that of the lake. “All around it’s charming and delightful,” one visitor wrote on TripAdvisor.

The city of Annecy has been showered with praise by holiday-goers, charmed by the serene atmosphere and historic architecture.

One visitor shared their experience: “And enhanced by the gorgeous sun filled day. Strolling along Le Thiou took us to the marvellous Lake, passing the wonderful historic buildings that line both sides.

“It being Saturday, a holiday atmosphere was in full flow, all relaxing and enjoying the grand surroundings and attractions.”

Another tourist expressed their delight at the pristine conditions: “Sparkling clear waters were a joy to behold in this world where so much is polluted by us humans.

“The Lake is actively used by boaters, swimmers, sightseeing and water sports. The water was incredibly clear. As a visitor it was a pleasure to just observe the activities, look at the mountains and enjoy the old town of Annecy. Lake Annecy is magnificent! “

For Brits itching for a piece of this paradise, easyJet, British Airways, and Swiss Airlines offer daily flights to Geneva from the UK.

From there, Annecy is accessible within an hour by car, or slightly less by train. Alternatively, rail enthusiasts can embark on a scenic eight-hour journey from London St Pancras directly to Annecy.
