Iga Swiatek continued her impressive form at Roland Garros with a straight-sets win over Coco Gauff to book her place in the French Open final.

Swiatek had an impressive record against Gauff, winning 10 out of their 11 previous matches against each other, including two matches at Roland Garros, and this occasion was no different.

Gauff made too many unforced errors while Swiatek remained resolute on court, and held her nerve, fighting when she needed to, to look infallible.

Mirra Andreeva stunned the World No 2 Aryna Sabalenka to reach the French Open semi-finals, but the 17-year-old rising star could not produce the same magic against Italian Jasmine Paolini, and lost in straight sets.

Andreeva defeated an out-of-sorts Sabalenka 6-7 6-4 6-4 on Court Philippe-Chatrier to claim the win of her life, a year on from reaching the third round as a qualifier. The Russian will play another first-time grand slam semi-finalist, after Paolini upset Elena Rybakina. The 28-year-old Italian and 12th seed prevailed 6-2 4-6 6-4 against the former Wimbledon champion, and only needed two sets to beat Andreeva 6-3 6-1.

Jasmine Paolini knocks out teenage Mirra Andreeva in straight sets

Jasmine Paolini crushed Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva 6-3 6-1 on Thursday to bulldoze her way into the French Open final and continue Italy’s Roland Garros fairytale.

The diminutive 28-year-old is the first Italian player to reach the final on the Paris clay since doubles partner Sara Errani in 2012, and her resounding victory came two days after compatriot Jannik Sinner made it to the last four in the men’s draw, guaranteeing he would be world number one next week.

Paolini, who used her booming forehand to devastating effect on court Philippe Chatrier, will face the ultimate challenge in Iga Swiatek, after the world number one and two-time defending champion made light work of Coco Gauff in the other semi-final.

Andreeva, who had won her previous match against Paolini in Madrid in April, failed to make the most of the few opportunities she had, and made too many unforced errors to stand a chance in what was both players’ first appearance in a Grand Slam semi-final.

Jasmine Paolini knocks out teenage Mirra Andreeva in straight sets

Paolini said after the match: “I happy for sure. It was a tough match, she’s playing unbelievable and she’s 17 years old, she’s so complete, I was a bit nervous before the match, I lost against her one month ago and I said today ‘you have to do better’.

“I’m really happy I managed to win the match at the end.”

“I had it (the previous game) in my mind, it was painful in Madrid, I was up 5-2 in the first set and then I lost so I just wanted to step on court and try to do better, hit the ball and enjoy -it worked so I am really happy.”

Paolini added: “To dream I think it’s the most important thing in sport and in life, so I am happy that I could dream this moment, I don’t know what to say I am so emotional.”

Jasmine Paolini 6-3 5-1 Mirra Andreeva

Andreeva has found her movement and form, that was a stunning point to go 0-15 up, but she can’t follow it up with a second. Her backhand has not been brilliant all match, and that was another example.

But her forehand wins another point as Paolini hits the ball into the net.

Andreeva has a chance now at 30-40, she really has to take it, but she can’t and Paolini makes it deuce.

Andreeva is left yelling at her racket and Paolini has the advantage, which she takes to move within one game of the French Open final.

Jasmine Paolini 6-3 4-1 Mirra Andreeva

Andreeva goes behind on her first serve, but she does pull it back with a good controlled high volleyed backhand with her back to the court.

But the high bouncing ball seems to play into Paolini’s strengths and she pounces to move ahead at 15-30.

Andreeva misses a backhand and Paolini has two break points, and she takes the first one.

Andreeva is nearly in tears, but she is also nearly out of the tournament.

Jasmine Paolini 6-3 2-1 Mirra Andreeva – BREAK

Andreeva hits the ball into the net with her usually reliable double-handed backhand and the ball flies into the net.

Paolini goes 0-30 ahead, and Andreeva double faults giving the Italian three break points. She has taken one from one in the first set.

Almost a second double-fault, but she does win a point back, and another with a good low volley out of reach of the 5ft four Paolini.

But she can’t get back into this game fully, and Paolini goes a break up.

Jasmine Paolini 6-3 0-1 Mirra Andreeva

Andreeva has the first service game of the second set, and she takes the first point having gone off court briefly between the sets.

Paolini covers ground so quickly at the back of the court, but Andreeva goes 40-15 ahead.

Andreeva lost the first set against Sabalenka and came back to win, although it was the biggest game of her career by some distance.

Paolini is hitting powerfully, and Andreeva can defend the first head-height forehand, but doesn’t have an answer to the second.

Andreeva does hold to a stunning backhand down the line.
