Greece’s second biggest island that most UK tourists haven’t heard of

Must read

While Greece is famed for its iconic islands like Crete and Santorini, its second-largest island, Evia, remains a hidden gem that most UK tourists have yet to discover.

Also known as Euboea, Evia is just off the east coast of mainland Greece.

Offering an idyllic escape with beautiful beaches, lush landscapes, and rich history, it is all within proximity to Athens.

Despite its size and beauty, Evia often flies under the radar for international visitors, mainly due to its lack of a major airport.

However, its charm lies in its off-the-beaten-path appeal, making it an ideal destination for those looking to avoid the usual tourist crowds.

Evia is home to some of Greece’s most picturesque beaches.

One standout is Kalamos Beach, a serene bay on the island’s eastern side.

With crystal-clear blue waters, rentable sunbeds and umbrellas, and nearby restaurants, Kalamos Beach is perfect for a peaceful day by the sea.

For a more adventurous journey, head to Chiliaou Beach on the Aegean coast, surrounded by the breathtaking Dirfi mountain range.

The road to Chiliaou is part of the experience, winding through charming villages, dense forests, and stunning waterfalls.

Nature lovers will find paradise in Dimosari Gorge, a spectacular site featuring cascading waterfalls, rocky ravines, and lush greenery.

The 10-kilometre hike from Petrokannalo Col to Kallianos Beach is one of the island’s highlights, shaded by trees and offering opportunities to cool off in natural pools along the way.

The walk is equally rewarding in reverse, starting from the beach and heading inland toward the gorge.

One of the reasons Evia has remained under the radar is its lack of a dedicated airport.

The nearest option is Athens International Airport, just a short drive or ferry ride away.

Visitors can catch a ferry from Rafina to either Marmari or Karystos or opt to drive across the mainland’s bridge at Halkida, which connects directly to the island.

For those willing to take the journey, Evia offers a rewarding experience of natural beauty, adventure, and tranquility, without the bustling crowds that are common on Greece’s more popular islands.

Whether you’re soaking in the thermal springs, hiking through gorges, or enjoying pristine beaches, Evia is a hidden treasure waiting to be explored.
