A leisurely stroll in the great outdoors is a fantastic way to lift your spirits and get those endorphins pumping. Fortunately, some of the most enjoyable walks that leave ramblers grinning from ear to ear can be found right here on our British shores.

Research conducted by Inghams used facial recognition technology analysed Instagram posts of people who have embarked on renowned walks spanning from England to Australia in order to determine which trails left people with the biggest smiles.

The results revealed that one of the world’s longest walks also happens to be its happiest. The UK proudly holds its own in the rankings, boasting four out of the top ten walking trails located right here on home soil.

England takes the crown with the two leading spots, with visitors experiencing sheer joy as they traverse the South West Coast Path (happiness score: 99.30) and the Thames Path (happiness score: 99.29), reports the Mirror.

The South West Coast Path clinched the number one position overall, earning it the title of the world’s happiest walk. This trail spans an impressive 630 miles across England from Somerset to Dorset, making it England’s lengthiest walk.

Originally established as a route for the Coastguard to patrol for smugglers, the path meanders along the coastline, dipping into every cove en route. As it snakes over the coast, it ascends and descends at every river mouth, and the total distance climbed over the course of the walk is believed to be nearly four times the height of Mount Everest.

Enthusiastic hikers have lauded a particular trek as having unforgettable views. One avid walker quoted on Tripadvisor said: “Oh what a walk. We have completed Minehead to St Ives in 15 days, memories to last a life time but so worth it.”

Another described their experience: “A wonderful week in varied terrain with beautiful views, isolated walks with wildlife for company to high peaks and beautiful valleys. This interspersed with pleasant seaside towns and some beautiful forests, rivers, beaches.”

An enchanted traveller recalled: “A magical trip along the coast from Mousehole to Lamorna,” adding, “A little steep at times, but mostly fairly easy. Be sure to wear good shoes. We returned inland, and had a great hike, walked about 13 km in total.”

Someone else offered high praise, calling it a “WALK OF A LIFETIME”.
