Egypt’s sprawling capital is an ancient city which has stood on the banks of the Nile for more than 1,000 years and is one of the largest cities in Africa. At its heart is Tahrir Square and the vast Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiquities including royal mummies and King Tutankhamun artefacts.
Around 10 miles from the heart of Cairo is Giza, the home of the world-famous pyramids and Great Sphinx, which date back to the 26th century BC.
The hustling and bustling city offers something for everyone, whether you’re looking to learn about its incredible history or hoping to soak up the sun on the beach day. There are also plenty of things to do on a family holiday to keep the kids engaged and entertained.
With soaring summer temperatures and an estimated 3,450 hours of sunshine year-round, it’s also a destination where you can expect plenty of sun.
According to a new analysis by personal finance experts at Sambla, which looked at value for money and average sunshine in destinations around the world, Cairo is the “top tourism destination where you get the most sunshine for your money”.
The price of sun hours was calculated based on a week’s holiday for all rankings, to uncover how much, on average, you can pay for seven days of sun for the stated price of hotels or flights.
“Our study places Cairo as the ideal holiday destination to maximise your budget per sunshine,” said the experts from Sambla. “Egypt’s capital benefits from an average of 11.4 hours of sunshine per day, between the months of July to September, and costs as little as £48.81 for a one-week stay based on two people sharing.
“In fact, Cairo has the second cheapest accommodation in our study of all 50 destinations we researched, and the third highest amount of daily hours of sunshine, topped only by Paphos and Abu Dhabi.
“Tourists looking to holiday in Cairo this summer can expect to spend an average of £3.68 per week on sunshine hours, or 53p per day.”
One area the finance team highlighted was the cost of dining out, which was among the cheapest out of all of the destinations included in the study. The analysis found that, on average, a couple dining out in Cairo can expect to pay £20.40 for a meal in a restaurant.
They added that you might expect to tip around 10 percent to your server. A half pint of beer, on average, was calculated to be £2.02.
The month with the hottest weather in Cairo is July, with an average temperature of 28C – though the thermometer can rise much higher than this. The coldest month is January, at 14C, but even then, there is sunshine to be had.
