Historic city’s beautiful greenery makes it the ideal weekend trip this summer

Must read

On top of the list, and hard to miss, is Edinburgh Castle – an iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been built on an extinct volcano.

Learn about the castle’s history and secrets, including its time as a military fortress and royal residence, by attending immersive exhibitions.

Then there’s The Tea Rooms and Redcoat Café to enjoy a spot of lunch in the historic grounds set in the Scottish Capital.

Soak up more culture at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, open daily from 10am to 5pm, which is free to visit.

There, you will see artwork by renowned artists such as Vermeer, Titian, Rembrandt, Velázquez and the Impressionists.

More contemporary art can be seen at the Fruitmarket Gallery, whereas more traditionalists can enjoy art at the National Galleries of Scotland and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

Among the Edinburgh city centre, you will find independent book shops, clothing and home stores, and cafés.

Definitely explore Old Town, where you can find attractions such as St Giles Cathedral, The Scotch Whiskey Experience, and the World of Illusions.

For those wanting a more spooky experience, the Royal Mile has a number of ghost tours to try out.

As well as walking on foot, there are several open-top bus sightseeing tours if you’re feeling pressed for time, or you like to give your legs a rest.

Just outside of the city centre there’s 72 acres of the Royal Botanic Garden – an urban jungle with Victorian glasshouses, home to giant lily pads, orchids and ancient palm trees.

Considered to be a national treasure, the Royal Botanic Garden has a spectacular Living Collection of plants over 350 years old.

Between June 1 to September 2, families can enjoy creating their own LEGO gardens.

When it comes to dining out, being the Scottish capital, you can be assured there are culinary delights that appeal to any budget.

As the evening draws in, make sure to view the most beautiful sight on top of Calton Hill.

Offering unmatched panoramic views of the city, Calton Hill is the best place to see gorgeous landmarks, such as the Edinburgh Castle, Arthur’s Seat, and the Old Town.

Then there’s the buzzy nightlife to enjoy about town once the sun sets in the glorious Scottish Capital of Edinburgh.
