Hotel worker shares one thing you should leave at check out – not just tip

Must read

A hotel worker has given some advice on what people should do at check out that helps the staff – and it’s not just leaving a decent tip.

A lot of work goes into keeping a hotel running, much of which happens behind the scenes without guests ever really noticing. Now a hospitality worker has shared something small that people can do that really helps them out.

Over on Threads, user Sarah Jay asked: “I have a question for hotel housekeeping staff… Does it make any difference to your job if I strip the bed before leaving? And probably more importantly – does it in any way make it harder?!”

With over 1,100 replies, many hotel workers both present and past chipped in to share what they thought on the matter, and reveal a few insights of their own.

One user replied: “I worked in hotels for years while I was at uni and it’s never expected or required for guests to do this. It’s definitely not the ‘norm’, but I can’t tell you how much it was appreciated.

“Not only did it mean you could get through that room much faster, you also just felt really cared about/respected by a stranger you would never meet. little gestures like that made you think someone tried to make your day easier for no other reason than being kind.”

Another person shared: “As a former housekeeper: It saves us time and energy but most importantly shows thoughtfulness, especially if you don’t have a couple bucks to leave a tip for the cleaner. Remove the top sheet, flat and fitted sheets as well as the pillowcase. Doesn’t matter where you leave it in the room. The duvet/blanket rarely gets washed unless something’s been spilled on it.”

Someone else penned: “Having worked housekeeping, it is VERY much appreciated if you strip the bed. However, you can leave the beds alone and leave a cash tip. THAT’S appreciated even more!!”

One person who claimed to be a former hotel maid revealed that, in addition to stripping the bed and putting dirty towels in a pile, putting all rubbish in the bin is a massive help.

They also added a few recommendations. “As soon as you get in your room, remove the bed spread. They only get washed when ABSOLUTELY necessary. Bring anti bacterial wipes & wipe down EVERYTHING! Wear slippers!”

And lastly, many people recommended giving a tip directly to your maid who has been cleaning your room, if you can. Someone wrote: “Tips aren’t always shared or given to the person who has been working on your room all week, it can often end up being a different maid and they will miss out.”
