Hunza G review: Cosmo UK puts the iconic swimwear brand to the test

Must read

When Rosie Huntington-Whiteley posted photos from her Italian holiday back in 2019, lounging on a yacht wearing Hunza G’s Domino swimsuit in the blush colourway, what followed was an unprecedented shopping frenzy. Celebrity bikini pics are hardly a rare occurrence, especially from Rosie (no shade, we love seeing her five-star destinations and trend-led holiday wardrobe to match), yet her exact Hunza G swimsuit sold out almost instantly, crashing the website in the process.

This was hardly Hunza G’s first brush with A-list notoriety. Originally established in the ‘80s, the London-based swimwear brand was at one time best known for the white and blue cut-out mini dress worn by Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Iconic? You know it.

However, after a relaunch in 2015 and a new creative director, it didn’t take long for the label to amass a cult following and celebrity fanbase including the likes of Hailey Bieber, Dua Lipa, Emily Ratajkowski, Sabrina Carpenter, Kim Kardashian, Ashley Graham, Rihanna, Suki Waterhouse and, as previously mentioned, Rosie HW. In fact, Rosie’s beauty brand Rose Inc went on to collaborate with Hunza G on a limited edition nine-piece collection last year.

So, what is it about Hunza G swimwear that the collective A-list – alongside Fashion Editors and influencer cool girls – seriously rates? In short, it all comes down to its signature seersucker crinkle fabric. As well as looking très chic, the designs are ‘one size fits all’ – well, a UK size 6 to 16 – with the fabric stretching and moulding to accommodate. Meaning, if your weight fluctuates or you get pregnant, you shouldn’t have to buy a new bikini as your Hunza G will stretch and shrink with your changing body. Bye-bye, maternity swimwear and hello sustainable shopping!

Think it sounds too good to be true? We decided to put Hunza G to the test by recruiting two members of the Cosmopolitan UK team, one a size six and the other a size 16, to roadtest the designs. After all, with prices starting at £165 for a swimsuit and £170 for a bikini set, they’re definitely investment pieces.

I’ve got Hunza G’s Nancy one-shoulder bikini in a rust colour. I’m five foot six and a size six, and quite straight up and down with a shorter torso and longer legs. Because of this, I can find getting the right bikini bottoms a bit tricky – they somehow often end up both digging into my hips and bunching at the bum.

I was unsure of the one-size-fits-all approach previously, having always bought bigger tops than bottoms, separately. But the Hunza G bottoms, with the seamless crinkle and stretch fabric, means they sit just right. Even when wet from a dip! I felt confident even with the cheekier bottom cut. The one-shoulder style was a new thing for me (I’m a triangle girlie or a balconette at a push) but it always felt comfortable and secure. Actually, the bikini top shape makes me feel quite Jane Fonda, AKA fab!

This bikini has been with me from the beaches of Brighton to the shores of Sicily, cliff-jumping into Marseille’s waters and in the chlorinated pool at London Fields Lido. With frequent outings and washes, I can confirm its durability makes it the real deal for continually fab and free bikini days. Whether the British weather agrees is another story…

I’ve always loved the look of Hunza G swimwear, but it never occurred to me that they would fit my curvy size 16 body. So, when I got the chance to try out both a swimsuit and a bikini, I was elated. The Celine Swim in the metallic moss colourway has slightly more coverage compared to other swimsuit styles from the brand and to my surprise, it stretched over my 40F bust with ease. It was super flattering on my front and gave my cleavage a good perk up, too.

The only downside when it came to the swimsuit was the plunging, open back. Having big boobs means I need more material in that area and unfortunately, due to the one-piece stretching so much around my bust, the straps kept sliding to the back of my armpits, practically falling off my shoulders. It’s a shame there isn’t an additional strap going widthways across the back to ensure this doesn’t happen (like in the Maya design), because this swimsuit would be absolutely perfect for those of us with larger chests if that were the case.

As for the Nadine Stripe Bikini, I was absolutely terrified about fitting into this. Holding it up in front of my body, it looked like something a seven-year-old would wear. However, as soon as I got it on and stretched it (and I mean STRETCHED) over my boobs, it looked amazing! The hoop detailing at the bust was really doing some heavy lifting, and for that, I applaud it. Plus, unlike the swimsuit, there were no problems when it came to the back. In fact, it was really flattering all over, earning me a fair few compliments around the pool.

I’m really surprised and happy that this brand does genuinely cater to all the sizes in their claimed range. My only criticism would be to consider how the designs accommodate different body shapes and sizes, in my case with the back width an issue due to my bigger bust. I’ll definitely be grabbing another one of their bikinis for my next getaway!
