I stayed at UK’s most underrated beach destination – and loved every minute

Must read

If you thinking of sophisticated UK staycations, Bognor Regis may not be the first that springs to mind. But with rising costs around the country, the seaside resort is still a classic destination to unwind without breaking the bank.

The resort has a reputation for being cheap and cheerful, something to be welcomed with skyrocketing taxes and daily costs, but with renovated hotels and fun new activities, it could win over even the snobbiest of travellers.

Just an hour and a half from London by train, it is an easy location to reach from the capital if you’re short on time, and there is plenty to keep you occupied whether you’re in blazing sunshine or wind and rain.

We booked the two-night Butlins for the 00s Weekend, hoping to reminisce about our youth, and with nostalgic favourites Blue, Tinchy Stryder and Blazin’ Squad performing their classic hits from 20 years earlier, it did not disappoint.

With late-night discos and pop star performances, we were not expecting a luxury destination, but we were pleasantly surprised we arrived at the resort’s seaside hotel.

With new designs, en-suites and two huge balconies with a sea view, the hotel was everything we were looking for, especially as we managed to bag two adjoining rooms so we could get ready together for nights out.

Each morning, I woke up after a great night’s sleep to the sound of the sea, and with glorious weather after a wet and windy summer, it was all I wanted and more.

One of the huge upsides of staying at Butlins is having everything on your doorstep – there is no stress about where to eat, or how you are going to spend your day, or worrying about the logistics of everything.

All of the restaurants, bars and activities are just metres away from each other, giving you a blissful break from reality where your time is entirely your own.

There are so many activities to choose from to keep your children entertained while you have a breather, from the pool to the fairground, as well as the newly opened Playexperience, which allows your child to try minigolf, escape rooms and laser tag. And if you choose to stay out for a late night, your bed is only five minutes away, meaning I had some extra time for some much-needed beauty sleep.

But it was the beach that was the real winner, as we decided to spend our sunny Saturday walking along the pebbles to soak up the blue skies and lack of rain. Despite it being winter, the beach was pleasantly busy as everyone jumped at the chance to head to the sea.

With pretty beach spots just minutes away from Butlins, it was easy to walk down the promenade so we could enjoy the stunning South Coast scenery. But there are plenty of other nearby beaches, including Pagham and Aldwick, if you want something a little bit quieter.

With UK staycation prices skyrocketing, a simple weekend away can end up breaking the bank, but one of the best things about our Bognor Regis trip was the price. With deals for £49pp for 2025, it is the perfect destination to take your family and friends for a chilled out trip.
