A Parkingeye spokesman said: “Although extremely rare, motorists do not need to worry about getting a parking charge if there has been a technical issue with the on-site system. Our appeals team will always handle such cases appropriately and cancel any parking charge that has been issued due to a technical error.”

A Lidl spokesman said technical issues with parking cameras such as you experienced were “rare”, but insisted the best course of action was to directly contact the car park operator.

He added: “We have car park management systems in place to help ensure availability of parking spaces for customers. In the extremely unfortunate event that a customer believes they have wrongfully received a parking charge, we encourage them to appeal via the process outlined on their parking charge notice and explain their situation.

“Charges can be investigated and, if necessary, cancelled as swiftly as possible.”
