Sat on an East London canal over the weekend, my head was turned several times as countless pairs of vintage sport shorts ran, jogged, and strutted by almost allowing me to be the latest to be able to raise the ‘Paul Mescal Spotted In East London’ claxon. But it wasn’t. He was well on his way to Milan, ready to slip into an even smaller pair of shorts to watch the latest Gucci collection traverse the catwalk.
Stick to what you know was the memo from Mescal and his stylist Felicity Kay as they opted to choose a pair of shorts that riffed on his fan-favourite Gaelic football shorts to attend the menswear SS25 show in Milan. Where once his shorts spoke of athleticism, these here had a more languid approach and more akin to a classic cotton boxer short. Consider this the actor’s take on fashion’s long-standing argument for underwear as outerwear.
The actor also offered up a flash of torso as his button-up shirt fell undone at the waist, with the look completed with classic Gucci horsebit loafers and white cotton socks.
The influence of Mescal’s penchant for flashing a little thigh even found itself on the catwalk with creative director Sabato De Sarno offering up his take for the SS25 collection. Here they came distinctly more structured than Mescal’s cotton casuals, worn with car coats and candy coloured collared knits.
