Inside the UK’s most desirable village where homes are like ‘mini castles’

Must read

Derbyshire is home to a wealth of picturesque locations that many dream of calling home, with the Peak District being a particular favourite.

From the timeless allure of Ashford-in-the-Water to the tourist magnet of Buxton, there’s a host of stunning spots nestled in and around the Peak District, boasting homes that are truly unique.

However, no Derbyshire village is more sought-after than Edensor on the Chatsworth Estate.

In fact, last year it secured the top spot in the Telegraph’s list of most desirable places to live in the UK.

But don’t start packing your bags just yet, properties in this idyllic countryside are as rare as they are beautiful. With an average house price of £670,644, any prospective buyers fortunate enough to find an available property will need deep pockets.

Homes here are adorned with the signature Chatsworth blue paint, and architectural styles range from mock Tudor to Swiss cottages. Interestingly, this 19th-century architectural haven wasn’t always situated here.

The picture-perfect village was designed from scratch approximately 180 years ago. The original location for the village was actually much closer to the pristine River Derwent, reports Derbyshire Live.

Its riverside position meant the village was visible from Chatsworth House, a view that didn’t sit well with the 6th Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish. The solution was to dismantle the entire village and move it behind one of the many hills in the Peak District, out of his view.

This led to the birth of a new village, Edensor, which boasts a diverse range of architectural styles from Tudor, Norman, Swiss and Italian style cottages, to mini-turreted castles.

This eclectic mix of building styles has transformed Edensor into a popular destination for tourists visiting the Derbyshire Dales. With well-kept walking paths from Bakewell and just a ten-minute stroll from Chatsworth House, Edensor is easily reachable.

The study was conducted by Savills who identified the most sought-after villages based on highest house prices, top lifestyle amenities, connectivity and picturesque charm. Their research suggests that many households are renting for months until a property in their chosen village becomes available.
