Many people could see their Italy travel plans thrown into chaos
People planning to travel to Italy have been issued a warning as pilots and cabin crews are set to walk out this week. Elsewhere, local strikes in the European nation will lead to further disruption.
Millions of people visit Italy from the UK each year and with September set to be the second busiest month for travel in 2024, it is anticipated that thousands of holidaymakers could be impacted by delays and cancellations this week. According to Italian publication Wanted In Rome, a four-hour strike is scheduled for Saturday, September 7, affecting some of Italy’s main flights.

The industrial action will involve pilots and members of cabin crew from ITA Airways and Wizz Air between 1pm and 5pm, with airport staff set to walk out at the same time. This includes air traffic controllers at Rome Fiumicino and Olbia, Sardinia, baggage handlers at Milan Malpensa, Florence and Pisa airports, and cleaning staff at Milan Linate and Malpensa.

On Sunday, September 8, train passengers in Italy will face disruption due to a 24 hour walkout by conductors, drivers and other onboard staff. And on Monday, September 9, people can expect disruption to local public transport in cities, including Rome, as staff at bus, tram and commuter train operators around the country plan to strike for eight hours.
