Job description: Junior reporter, Civil Society Media (CSM)

Overall role:

Reporting to the news editor, the junior reporter will write charity sector news stories, produce other content and provide administrative support for Civil Society Media’s print and online publications and live events, to the high standard required by the company.

While we value professional qualifications, relevant study and work experience, what we value the most are candidates who are innately talented writers and communicators, are willing to learn and develop as part of a passionate and creative team, and have a genuine interest in learning more about the UK’s charity sector and developing their journalistic abilities and knowledge.

Objectives:

  • Help Civil Society Media to maintain and develop its market-leading position by contributing high-quality content to its online news site, multimedia, print magazines and events.
  • Provide administrative support across the range of CSM’s print and online publications.
  • Ensure all content you produce is accurate, informative, produced to house style and tone, and delivered by deadline.
  • Represent CSM to a high standard both internally and externally.
  • Work with other members of the editorial team to coordinate editorial coverage across all CSM publications.
  • Contribute to general company strategy and product planning processes as required.
  • Work in line with CSM’s values of quality, independence, and integrity.

Day-to-day tasks:

  • Write charity sector news items for civilsociety.co.uk, and ensure they are timely, topical, accurate and adhere to CSM house style.
  • Help to ensure content from our three print magazines is correctly uploaded on time and presented appropriately on the website.
  • Attend events in order to gather news and contacts.
  • Contribute to our podcasts and other multimedia productions when required.
  • Engage on social media as an individual reporter and on behalf of our titles.
  • Write analysis and features as requested by editors.
  • Assist with commissioning of content for online, as directed by the editor.
  • Cultivate relationships with key figures in the charity sector – and regularly meet existing and new contacts in person.
  • Assist with the production of email news bulletins as required by editors.
  • Take an interest in current affairs and be aware of events in the wider world affecting charities.
  • Develop an understanding of the issues common to all charities.
  • Contribute to other CSM products and events as required.
  • Maintain a professional conduct and appearance.

Behaviours:

  • Be a positive and productive force within the business.
  • Engage and collaborate with staff in all departments to optimise our commercial efforts.
  • Communicate in a timely and constructive manner, both internally and externally.
  • Be open and honest with colleagues and not operate solo or in a silo.
  • Always behave respectfully towards other team members and external contacts.
  • Contribute to team meetings in a positive and proactive manner.
  • Work at all times to the company’s brand values of independence, quality and integrity.

About us:
