Kat Frost: Devon teenager playing international cricket for Spain

Must read

A 16-year-old cricketer from Devon said she “never imagined this is what I’d be doing” after making her international debut for Spain.

Kat Frost was born in Zaragoza while her parents were working there but returned to Plymouth when she was ten months old.

The all-rounder was invited to play for Valencia Vipers in the first ever La Liga for Women’s cricket in May 2024 after her father approached Cricket Espana.

“I was nervous because they had seen these stats and I had to play up to them,” she said. “I was like, you know what, I’m just going to have a go.”

Kat scored more than two hundred runs and took five wickets in the tournament in Barcelona and went on to win her first cap for the national side against Greece in September.

In 2024, Spain moved up from 37th to 24th in the ICC T20 world rankings with several UK-based players in the team.

“They class us as one of them as we’re all under the Spanish national team,” said Kat, who has “felt Spanish her whole life”.

She added: “When you’re not playing you’re talking to the girls and they prefer it to be in Spanish. You’re in their country so you need to kind of make an effort.”

Kat may have to miss the World Cup qualifier in June next year because she will be taking her GCSEs but becoming an international has not meant being treated any different by her school friends.

“I don’t think it makes much difference, I’m just Kat,” she said.

“Cricket has always been such a massive part of my life, it hasn’t really changed much apart from they can watch me on YouTube if they want to.”
