Keep your hotel room at ‘perfect temperature’ using woman’s genius travel tip

Indulge on your next holiday with this revolutionary hotel trick.

We all crave the finest when we embark on a holiday. After all, it’s our opportunity to break away from our daily routines and unwind for a week or two before returning to work, so we want to maximise our time and experience luxury living.

One of the most vexing aspects of staying in a hotel can be the room temperature controls, whether it’s air conditioning or heating.

You often have to insert your room key into a device on the wall to activate the controls, and as soon as you remove your key to venture out for the day, the system shuts down – resulting in you returning to a room that’s either too hot or too cold.

But what if we told you there’s a clever hack you can employ to ensure your room is always at the ideal temperature?

Shared on TikTok by Jord Bernard, the trick is something we can all implement the next time we visit a hotel without shelling out any additional money – provided you have one item with you.

She said that if you have any other card with you, you can often insert it into the device on the wall to keep the electricity flowing – it doesn’t have to be your room key.

Any card could suffice, but you probably don’t want to use your bank card, so bring a less crucial card such as a library card, a points card for a shop or supermarket, or a public transport travel card with you on holiday.

In her viral clip, she reveals: “For anyone who doesn’t already know, you can put any card in the slot in your hotel room, which means you can leave the AC on when you go to dinner and come back to a perfectly chilled room.”

While some commenters on her post debated the ethics of this energy-consuming trick, Jord clarified that she only uses it for about 30 minutes to avoid leaving the air conditioning on all night.

She added: “No more having to leave the AC on while you sleep! As someone who spends zero time in my room, this is an actual lifesaver. I just give the AC a quick 30-minute blast while I’m at dinner, and then it’s the perfect temperature for sleeping.”

The tip was met with mixed reactions, as some holidaymakers admitted they’re less cautious with electricity use while away from home, and others pointed out practical considerations like keeping the fridge powered to chill food and drinks.

One individual confessed: “I do this. Not because I want to keep the room cool or to waste energy, but I want to keep the mini-bar/fridge cool because I keep food and drink in it for later!” Another chimed in with: “I wanted to leave something in the fridge once and it wouldn’t work without the card, so it’s very smart for that.”
