Nestled high up in the Alps, a certain region may be famed for its beauty but it is also an area that is one of the least visited.
Travel allows a person to get out of their comfort zones, inspires an individual and also allows a person to taste and try new things.
Exploring new surroundings allows a person to engage with different people, embracing new adventures and creating meaningful experiences you’ll remember for a lifetime.
When it comes to the most visited places in the world, Bangkok in Thailand, Paris in France and London in England all take the top spots.
But what are the areas least visited and why is a certain country renowned for its beauty featured on the list?
Liechtenstein is the sixth-smallest sovereign state in the world by area and found in western Europe, located between Switzerland and Austria.
The European country has a population of less than 40,000 and is the second least-visited country in Europe.
The region is one of the world’s two doubly landlocked countries, apart from Uzbekistan, which means it is wholly surrounded by other landlocked countries.
It may be spectacular but it also has no international airport available including no large train stations, which is one of the biggest reasons most don’t venture there.
Lichtenstein is roughly 62 square miles, making it eight times smaller than Los Angeles.
Its history is fascinating and was first occupied during the Neolithic Period.
It’s been an independent state under the rule of the Princely House of Liechtenstein, a family which reigns by hereditary status, since 1719.
This means Lichtenstein is run by a constitutional hereditary monarchy on a democratic and parliamentary basis with the Reigning Prince and the democratically elected Parliament both sharing power.
Despite Lichtenstein’s overall wealth and low unemployment rates, relative poverty is seen throughout which also adds to its lack of tourists.
in 2021, there were 73,400 tourist arrivals, a stark difference compared to its popular neighbour Paris who saw a whopping 2.6 million tourists visited Paris in the same period.
According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, the 10 least-visited countries in the world in 2022 were:
- Kiribati 2 tourist arrivals
- Bhutan 21 tourist arrivals
- Tonga 22 tourist arrivals
- Samoa 51 tourist arrivals
- Vanuatu 65 tourist arrivals
- Papua New Guinea 69 tourist arrivals
- Liechtenstein 101 tourist arrivals
- Cook Islands 114 tourist arrivals
- Burkina Faso 116 tourist arrivals
- Angola 130 tourist arrivals
