A bold travel buff has taken on the challenge of staying in some of the UK’s ‘worst-rated hotels’ to determine if they truly live up to their reputations – and the results are quite shocking.

Would you brave a few discomforts for a cheap holiday? Maybe a mysterious carpet stain wouldn’t deter you if the price was right, or perhaps you’d ignore a bit of dust, strange smells, and an unwelcoming receptionist.

‌

But for those who prefer not to risk it, Zac Jones’ hotel reviews might be just what you need. The Liverpool-based content creator has been venturing into questionable accommodations across the country to see if they’re as bad as people say.

Regrettably, his findings often confirm the poor ratings, with experiences of mould-infested bathrooms, damaged furniture, and lingering cigarette odours. On a recent trip to Salford’s Weaste Hotel, he even claimed to find corridors overflowing with garbage.

“Tonight I’m in Salford staying in what’s one of the worst-reviewed hotels I’ve ever saw – the Weaste Hotel,” he said, posting to his account @zacjonesliverpool. “What I can say about this hotel is it looks like it’s had a touch of paint and it looks alright from the outside.

“But honestly? The reviews are terrible, telling me to avoid this place, but honestly? The photos on Booking.com where I booked this for £47 tonight do look quite nice. This is it from the outside, far from perfect but some of the older photos I saw of this place looked a lot worse… Well, let’s book into our room and see for ourselves.”

In a series of four videos, Zac takes viewers on a tour of the hotel, highlighting the good and bad points he encounters. Before even reaching his room, he spots several overflowing bin bags and an Asda shopping basket filled with rubbish.

“So, it took about 10 minutes for them to finish cleaning my room, so hopefully now it will be nice and clean.” he said, before opening the room door. “Oh gosh, it’s actually really nice, quite nice, it’s really big… got a fly going round it. Yeah, this is my room for the night.”

Walking around the room, Zac first notices the window sill which appeared to host an empty shampoo bottle, a few brown stains and little bits of rubbish, with one viewer suggesting it may be ‘bud’ – or cannabis. He continued: “I can appreciate the effort here, that’s a beautiful sofa honestly it’s a really nice sofa.

‌

“It’s a bit stained but that’s pretty gangster to be honest. I like the carpet although it has got stains all across the place, looking at the photos it looked brand new to me… oh, no is that chewing gum? What’s that?…

“It looks like a place with some potential and it smells a little of cigarette smoke – it’s nowhere near the worst room I’ve ever been in. And there is a nice view of Salford.”

‌

Moving on to the bathroom, Zac added: “We have a little bit of a dirty toilet, there’s cardboard off the bog roll [on the floor], very small mirror… that’s the shower.” He then zoomed into its floor which seemed to be cracked through the centre, admitting: “I’m a bit reluctant to stand on it to be honest.

“…The bed is clean and white – at least it is on the top layer. Is it underneath? Yes, and the mattress? Not quite as good, but it’s just little pieces of fabric.”

Summarising his thoughts he then went on: “Credit where credit’s due, my first impressions of this hotel is, it’s ok. A little bit rough around the edges – got a lot of potential.”

Zac’s review videos quickly racked up plenty of comments on the platform, with many viewers in disbelief over his findings. One person wrote: “Hehehe I’ve stayed in that it’s so bad from inside,” as someone else chimed in: “Zac – your brave going them ways.”

Meanwhile, another quipped: “The kebab shop at the side is stunning,” as one added: “You’re staying at all the places I stayed in when homeless, avoid the shops down the road at night, only stayed two nights there but wasn’t the worst.”
