Must read

It’s been two decades since the renowned artist-designer collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami, a collection that blended the Japanese artist’s expressive and playful motifs with LV’s signature monogram branding.

In news that will delight fashion collectors, the two are once again teaming up for 2025, with the French fashion house and artist partnering on an extensive re-edition of the original collection.

The launch will see Murakami infuse his inimitable style into more than 200 Louis Vuitton pieces, including the iconic Monogram Multicolore — featured substantially in the original collection — printed onto the house’s most sought-after City Bags, from the Speedy 25 to its OnTheGo tote. Alternative designs in the collaboration will also extend across Louis Vuitton’s range of small leather goods, accessories, travel luggage and shoes, with the option of designs featuring on a black or white background.

The re-envisioned collection will launch in two parts, with the first chapter available to shop from 1 January 2025. Zendaya has already given her seal of approval for the collection, featuring as a face of the accompanying campaign. The second chapter of the collaboration will be unveiled in March, with Murakami’s seasonally apt Cherry Blossom pattern anchoring the collection.

Fans of Murakami’s Superflat Panda design will also find the whimsical character animated on pieces including the Alma BB bag, Zippy wallet, and Keepall 45. Louis Vuitton’s perfume has also received a touch of Murakami’s magic, with the Superflat Garden and Superflat Panda art featuring on two of its fragrance bottles. For the most dedicated Louis Vuitton x Murakami collectors, the made-to-order Malle Wardrobe, which contains 33 Speedy bags, offers a treasured investment like no other.

Originally conceived by Louis Vuitton’s then-artistic director Marc Jacobs, there’s no doubt that this is the perfect time for a celebration of what is still regarded as one of the seminal collaborations of the Noughties. Those who remember the release of the collection the first time around will be poised to invest in a re-imagined piece from their past, meanwhile, the significance and pop-culture influence of the collection is sure to pique the younger generation’s ‘Y2K’ fascination.

The original collection was nothing short of a fashion sensation, seen on the arms of countless ‘It’ girls throughout the 2000s – from Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie to Jessica Simpson and Naomi Campbell – and was even featured more than once in the hit 2004 film Mean Girls. In more recent years, fashion fans including Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Zendaya have been seen sporting vintage versions.
