The M25 is facing severe delays this morning after a Tesco lorry burst into flames in the middle of the motorway.
The incident took place between Clacket Lane and Junction 6 at around 10pm on Sunday.
Video footage shows the Tesco lorry completely engulfed in flames, as huge pillars of smoke rise into the air from the burning vehicle.
Six crews from Surrey Fire and Rescue attended the scene on Sunday night to battle the ‘atrocious and intense’ flames.
Highways England said specialist recovery would be required and the road surface would likely need to be resurfaced.
In a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘We have five fire engines and two water carriers in attendance at a vehicle fire on the M25 between Clacket Lane and junction 6.
‘The road is closed both directions. Please avoid the area.’
The M26 westbound between Junction 2A near Wrotham Heath and the M25/A21 has been closed due to the incident.
M25 remains closed after lorry crash
The M25 remains affected in both directions between J5 near Sevenoaks and J6 near Godstone, after a lorry caught fire yesterday evening, police have confirmed.
The anti-clockwise carriageway has re-opened, but lane 3 and 4 (of 4) remain closed within J6.
The clockwise carriageway remains closed, and is likely to until at least midday today (21 Oct), as specialist recovery is required and the road may need to be resurfaced.
Police have advised motorists to continue avoiding the area and to seek alternative routes.
