Majorca panic as package holiday bookings slump

Must read

The island of Majorca has seen a slump in package holiday bookings thanks to ever increasing tourist habits.

This also comes after a number if anti-tourists protests on the island earlier this year.

Often organised by a travel company, package holidays are usually a fixed price that includes the cost of the hotel and travel, and sometimes food.

With a package holiday what you see is what you get. There are no nasty surprises or hidden charges along the way.

Operators are reporting a progressive fall in demand for package holidays.

However, tourists in Majorca are now favouring coach trips where small groups of people often stay for a few days with the aim to see as many sites as possible.

The Balearic Transport Federation estimates that the fleet of coaches on the islands has increased by around 15% over the past five years.

Large coaches have seen a drop in demand and many are being withdrawn from service.

According to The Balearic Transport Federation’s manager, Petra Mut, holdings are becoming shorter with the average stay falling to under a week to just six days.

He said: “The reduction in the average stay of tourists has fallen in recent years. It is now around six days. While holidays are becoming shorter, the numbers of tourists have been increasing – quite dramatically so.

“As well as the impact of changing demand on coach operators, there has also been an increase in the demand for hire cars.”

This comes just days after the EU has issued another warning to Majorca about its coastal businesses over alleged breaches of EU law.

The European Commission warned the Spanish government again that the method used to approve concessions was not in accordance with EU law, claiming it lacks the necessary transparency required by EU regulations for the use of public land.
