Majorca panic as Spanish island falls off list of best value holiday spots

Must read

Majorca has long been a popular destination for British holidaymakers, but new figures show it’s definitely not the place to go for tourists wanting value for money.

The Spanish island has dropped to 24th place in the Post Office Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer, with an average cost of £98.42 for essential tourist items like meals and drinks.

The latest survey indicates that Britons can get better value for their money in long-haul destinations, thanks to the stronger pound.

Hoi An, Vietnam, has emerged as the top value destination, with a basket cost of just £51.18, followed by Cape Town, South Africa, and Mombasa, Kenya.

These locations benefit from lower prices and favourable currency exchange rates, making them attractive options for cost-conscious travellers.

In Europe, Portugal’s Algarve region is the best value destination, ranking fifth with an average cost of £59.69.

It has overtaken Turkey and Bulgaria, where local prices have risen.

Paphos in Cyprus also enters the top 10, ranking tenth after a 6.8% drop in prices.

On the other end of the spectrum, Tamarindo in Costa Rica, New York, and St John’s in Antigua are among the most expensive destinations, with prices driven up by stronger local currencies. Tamarindo, in particular, now costs tourists an average of £158.

Despite local price increases in many destinations, the strong pound means British tourists can still find good value abroad. In 25 of the 40 destinations surveyed, prices in sterling terms are lower than they were last year, with seven of the ten cheapest locations offering better deals than before.

Laura Plunkett of Post Office Travel Money emphasised the importance of considering currency exchange impacts when choosing a holiday destination.

She noted that while long-haul destinations offer the most significant savings, travellers to eurozone countries should carefully compare prices, with Portugal and Cyprus standing out as top choices for bargain hunters.

With Mallorca’s value for money slipping, Britons may increasingly look to more distant and affordable destinations for their holidays this year.
