Mayor’s free travel scheme leads to ‘fright-ful’ front page – Journalism News from HoldtheFrontPage

A regional daily came up with a “spook-tacular” front page to cover a good news local transport story.

North East mayor Kim McGuinness recently announced that children under 11 would be able to travel for free on any bus in the region during half-term week, as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

The scheme, which is meant to make travel more affordable for families, coincides with Hallowe’en events across the region.

It generated a striking Halloween-themed front page for the Shields Gazette uner the headline ‘The Price is Fright.’

Tim Robinson, publisher for National World’s daily press division told HTFP: “This fright-ful front page was a great seasonal take on a local good news transport story.”

The story was reported by the publisher’s North East print team writer Tom Patterson while the page design was created by Craig Lightowler from the National World design hub.

Mayor McGuinness’s scheme is a repeat of a similar Kids Go Free scheme in the summer holidays which saw more than 360,000 children take up the offer, which is supported by North East bus operators.
