Medieval town in France is ‘Venice of the Alps’ but ‘cheaper’ and without crowds

Must read

Venice is undoubtedly one of the most unique and charming places in the world, and a must see when travelling through Italy.

However, the main downsides many travellers find when visiting this cultural hotspot are the crowds and the steep prices for food, accommodation and general activities.

That’s why a group of travel agents at eShores have recommended a similar destination in the French Alps that still somewhat flies under the radar but is just as breathtaking.

They said: “Imagine Venice’s romantic canals nestled against a backdrop of snow-capped Alps. Welcome to Annecy, the ‘Venice of the Alps.’

“This medieval French gem offers the same enchanting waterside charm as the Italian hotspot, but with a dramatic mountain panorama backdrop that takes your breath away.

“Wander through its historic old town and along the crystal-clear lake without fighting through tourist crowds or emptying your wallet.”

The experts highlighted the town’s canals and the “charming weekly markets where local artisans showcase traditional Savoyard crafts and delicacies”.

According to the agents, flights to Annecy can cost up to £25 less than to Venice, with round trips from London in December costing as little as £47.

Hotels also turn out to be cheaper, working out to £30 to 40 less per night, according to the agents.

Dining is also said to be more affordable in Annecy, costing £5 less per person.

Visitors to the Pearl of the French Alps have sung their praises on Reddit, where one person stated: “I’ve always dreamed of going here!”

Another Redditor recommended: “I went in 2019. The old city is gorgeous and really fun to just wander around. The park on the lakefront is very nice as well.

“The surrounding landscape is incredible – all the way around the lake. There’s a beautiful nature preserve at the south end of the lake with nicely maintained hiking trails and elevated walkways.

“Driving to top of Semnoz to get a view of the surrounding area was a lot of fun as well. It’s also fairly close to Geneva and Chamonix.”

A third user commented: “I spent a few days in Annecy this past summer, and it is easily the most stunningly beautiful place I’ve ever seen.”
