Millions of Brits only carry cash when they travel abroad, study reveals

Must read

Millions of Brits now only carry cash when they are abroad and using currency like Euros and Dollars, a study has found.

More than two thirds of adults say they are far more likely to use foreign notes when away than British Pound at home, mainly because they are wary of using debit and credit cards in another country.

Half of all holidaymakers take cash of the country they are visiting every time they travel, with fewer than one in five saying they never bother, according to a survey of 2,000 people.

But it’s the over-45s who are much more likely to take foreign cash than the under-25s – 57 per cent in the older group as opposed to 39 per cent of the younger ones.

Richard Carter, CEO and founder of Lopay, the card payments processing firm which conducted the survey, said: “Many tourists are worried that they may incur charges or unfavourable exchange rates by using their cards abroad.

“But the other thing to bear in mind is that many places in Europe are well behind the UK when it comes to taking cards, so it makes sense to carry cash.

“In the UK it’s different. Many more businesses are set up to take cards and those that aren’t are often missing out on custom.”

The research found that in Britain almost half those surveyed were irritated by traders who don’t take cards and almost one in five have not used cash for anything over £5 for six months or more.

Holidaymaker Alan Edwards, who is just back from a family campervan trip through France, said: “I hardly ever carry more than a few coins in cash when I’m at home so I was surprised in France that so many small shops didn’t take cards.

Alan, 56, from Wapping, London, added: “Bigger tourist areas were fine but several times I popped out to buy breakfast at a local boulangerie and needed cash for croissants. Thankfully I’d changed money before I went and had some Euros on me.”

When travelling abroad, it’s essential to manage your money wisely and securely. Here are some tips from Lopay’s Richard Carter, to help you safely use your card and cash while travelling:

 1. Inform Your Bank
Before traveling, inform your bank and credit card companies of your travel plans to avoid having your cards flagged for suspicious activity.

2. Understand Fees and Exchange Rates
Be aware of any foreign transaction fees or charges for using your card abroad. Familiarise yourself with the current exchange rates and compare them to the rates offered by your card \provider.

3.Use Credit Over Debit
Opt for credit cards over debit cards when making purchases. Credit cards often offer better fraud protection and may not directly link to your bank account, reducing the risk of unauthorised access.

4. Carry Local Currency
While many places accept cards, it’s wise to carry some local currency for small purchases, tips, or places that do not accept cards. Carry smaller denominations to avoid difficulties with making exact payments or receiving change.

5. Avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion
When given the option to pay in your home currency or the local currency, always choose the local currency to avoid unfavourable exchange rates and additional fees

6. Use Secure ATMs
Use ATMs located in banks or well-lit, secure areas to reduce the risk of card skimming or theft. Inspect the ATM for any signs of tampering or unusual devices attached to the card slot or keypad.

7. Monitor Your Statements
Frequently check your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorised transactions. If you notice any suspicious activity, report it to your bank immediately.

8. Use Mobile Payment Options.

Consider using mobile payment options like Apple Pay or Google Wallet, which can offer an added layer of security.

9. Keep Contact Numbers Handy
Have the contact numbers for your bank or card issuer readily available in case you need to report lost or stolen cards.

10. Secure Your Cards
Store your cards securely in a wallet or money belt, and only carry what you need for the day. Avoid keeping all your cards and cash in one place to minimise the risk of losing everything at once.

By following these tips, you can enjoy your travels with peace of mind, knowing your finances are managed safely and efficiently.
