An interesting half of football on Tyneside.

City were under some pressure at times, but they rode it out and provided the moment of brilliance necessary, courtesy of Jack Grealish and Josko Gvardiol.

Newcastle are still in this match obviously, but you’d imagine that a second goal for City would kill the game.

The home side need to find that little bit more quality in the final third.

A good chance for Newcastle as Trippier floats the free-kick forward and Burn heads it on. Joelinton does well to bring it down and swivel to hit a half-volley, and it forces a good save from Ederson!

Newcastle win a corner but as it’s cleared, the whistle goes for half-time.

Dangerous play from Grealish again as he cuts inside before laying it off to Akanji, whose shot is deflected behind.

Newcastle clear and it falls to Gordon, who then lays it off to Murphy around the halfway line. He does superbly too, as he skips past one sliding challenge before managing to beat Kovacic for pace down the wing. He tries to play the ball in, but it’s just overrun him, and City clear through a combination of Walker and Kovacic.

Almost two chances in as many seconds as Haaland looks clean through but can’t get it under control. Newcastle clear it straight to Gundogan on the edge of the box, but his ball to Haaland is also off-target and the chance is wasted again.

A rare waste from Gundogan as the ball breaks to him and he finds himself 2-v-1 with Haaland on his left and Pope off his line. Rather than give it to the Norwegian, he tries the audacious lob, but it’s right into the gloves of Pope.

Newcastle will be disappointed with the scoreline considering their performance so far. The home side have been promising for large periods.
