More than 100 young surfers have taken to the waves in Newquay for a competition which highlighted their skills.

Surfing England hosted the 2024 Rip Curl Grom Search at Great Western Beach on Saturday and Sunday with contests for under 12s, 14s and 16s.

The national governing body said 110 ‘groms’ – a term used for a surfer aged 16 or under – got on their boards in the sea to showcase what they could do.

Surfing England said the winners will go to the European final at Anglet beach in Biarritz, France, on 13 and 14 September.

Surfing England said the event had “world-class levels of athleticism” displayed throughout the weekend.

“This year’s competition saw fierce rivalry and extraordinary performances across all categories,” Surfing England added.

Lukas Skinner, who won a silver medal at the world surfing championship in May, claimed the U16s boys title while Sunny Ingram won the girls competition for the same age group.

In the U14s, Lila Skinner – the younger sister of Lukas – was crowned girls champion and Noah Cerne won on the boys side of the contest.

Ellie Hickie collected the U12s girls title and Harvey Waters was the boys champion.
