Nightmare for Majorca protesters as UK tourists do opposite to what was expected

Must read

Anti-tourism protests have swept through Majorca in recent months with locals saying their quality of life is being ruined.

Activists say the current tourism model has stretched public services to breaking point, harms natural resources, and makes local access to housing increasingly difficult.

The islands account for 15.2% of bookings in Spain and are the third most booked region in the last week behind Andalusia and Catalonia.

The Balearic government, meantime, has pledged to take “brave measures” against mass tourism in a matter of months.

From putting a ban on certain flights arriving at the destination to limiting the number of holiday rentals, cars and tourists, the authorities have been taking severe steps to deal with the swelling tourism.

The UK makes up for the second highest amount of bookings at 19.4% behind the domestic which makes up 52.7% of bookings.

More than 6.3 million British tourists visited Majorca between January and May, a 10.6% increase, followed by France with 4.42 million and Germany with 4.41 million.

Although there have been mass anti-tourism protests Spain’s unemployment rate dropped in the second quarter as the continued tourism boom added jobs in the services sector.
